The Leadership Trap: Assuming Growth Without Intentional Action

I've been reflecting on a recent discussion I had with some awesome leaders about what truly fuels growth, and it got me thinking about a trap many of us fall into: the Assumption Gap.

What is the Assumption Gap? It's simply this: assuming that you will automatically grow. We tell ourselves that just by showing up, putting in the hours, and going through the motions, we'll naturally evolve into better leaders.

But here's the hard truth: growth is not automatic. It doesn't just happen. It requires intentionality, focus, and a willingness to step outside of your comfort zone.

Are You Just "Going Through the Motions?"

Think about it: Are you truly challenging yourself? Are you actively seeking out new knowledge and experiences? Are you reflecting on your strengths and weaknesses and working to improve?

Or are you just assuming that growth will magically occur without any real effort on your part?

The Power of Intentionality

Intentionality is about taking ownership of your growth. It's about setting clear goals, creating a plan, and consistently taking action to move closer to your desired outcomes.

Here's how to start leading with intentionality:

  1. Set clear goals: What kind of leader do you want to become? What skills do you want to develop? What impact do you want to make?

  2. Create a plan: Break down your goals into smaller, actionable steps. What specific things will you do each day, each week, each month to move closer to your goals?

  3. Seek feedback: Ask trusted colleagues, mentors, or friends for honest feedback on your strengths and weaknesses. Be open to constructive criticism and use it to fuel your growth.

  4. Embrace the "Apprentice Heart:" Never stop learning. Always be open to new ideas, new perspectives, and new ways of doing things.

  5. Track your progress: Regularly assess your progress and make adjustments to your plan as needed. Celebrate your successes and learn from your failures.

Inspect What You Expect

Remember, growth is a journey, not a destination. It requires consistent effort, intentionality, and a willingness to embrace change.

Don't fall into the "Assumption Gap." Take ownership of your growth, set clear goals, and start leading with intention today.

You've got this! Let's build a better future, one intentional step at a time.
